I learned a lot about myself and coaching from this project. I learned that every coach is different and each coach has their own style of coaching. For me the best way to coach is to build a relationship with each one of my athletes and to really get to know them. The way I express myself is a big thing to, in some cases, I won't be able to talk to every athlete the same and not all athletes learn the same way I might have to take it slow with some while others catch on quick.
I grew from this by understanding that even in my everyday life I meet new people all the time and to really get to know someone I need to first build a relationship with them. The changes I made in the life of the athletes was that I helped them come out of their shell to try to interact with their teammates. They made new friends and a lot of new memories, and every time they tie track into their lives they think about all the accomplishments they have made and friends they have.
When I first came up with the idea of this project I did not consider the different obstacles that I was faced with throughout the entire experience. None of the obstacles that I dealt with were excruciatingly difficult by any means, but they were not really something that I necessarily considered. I think because of this it caused both positives and negatives throughout the whole process. One of the experiences that I consider an obstacle was how different children are in all aspects, especially in the way that they learn. As well as how my teaching styles might not work perfectly with the different ways that children learn. Trying to teach these children the basics of running track, and the different things that go into doing that, was at times difficult and frustrating. Some kids took the information that I was providing them and understand what I was saying right away. Others needed a lot more one-on-one time and help to truly understand what I was trying to explain.
Not considering the possibility that not everyone would understand, or learn quickly, the workouts and explanations that I was providing them is something that I will not take for granted again. Along with that I will consider the different endurance levels that children might have, because like I said before, every child learns differently as well as processes exercise and physical activity differently. The way I will motivate the kids, if I ever do a project like this again, will be a lot more versatile compared to how I began this project. This project really benefited my future by showing me early on the uniqueness in every child that I work with in my future with coaching track. I will always consider this anytime I work with children, but not just when it comes to track, exercise, and other physical activity. But even raising my own children and motivating them as a parent.
